CHARLIE
This is my dog, Charlie. He's a purebred Border Collie. We got him as a little puppy off of a farm. His parents were both working sheepdogs. In fact, he comes from a long line of herders. His great-great grandfather Zac was twice winner of the International Supreme Trials.
< This is Charlie as a puppy. Awww....
Charlie has enjoyed many sports. One of his favorites is frisbee.
I have taken him to competition once, and my dad has
taken him three times. We're not real serious about it as competition,
we just do it for fun. He's pretty good,
too.
This
shot was taken during the year I was competing. The photo was taken
a little too soon (as you can see, he's not quite in the air yet) but it
was the best one I had.
Not only does he do frisbee...but we've also done agility, obedience, fitting & showing, and tricks through 4-H. Here's Charlie going over an A-Frame. He did really good in '98, all except for the Pause Box at the end of the course. He wouldn't do it, so he lost valuable time and we came in 4th or 5th. That's still really good though, because we were competing against a lot of dogs. He loves all of the agility equipment, especially the A-Frame, Tunnel, and Dog Walk. We've just about perfected the Weave Poles.
Charlie's extremely smart, but we never did very well in obedience. We didn't do that well in fitting & showing either. We did, however, do very well in the tricks contest (it's only held at County level though). Each year we had competed in that we came in first because Charlie knows a lot of tricks. In '98 we impressed people with the "rock trick". It was a miniature version of what he does at home, where we can pick out a rock from a huge rock pile that we have in our backyard and throw it into the middle somewhere and he will retrieve it by scent alone, not having previously seen the rock ever before or knowing where we put it. During the tricks competition I used a pile of maybe 35 rocks so it was really easy for him to sniff it out and he found it in a matter of seconds. To show that I didn't have the trick rigged in any way, I had the judge pick out a rock and put it into the pile where she wanted it while Charlie stood by facing the opposite direction and blindfolded. He looked really cute, the trick was a success, and everyone watching was amazed.
On April 17,
1999, my 4-H group went to this place called
Ewe-topia where they train herding
dogs. Charlie had his first sheep experience that day...And he absolutely
loved it! We went there again August 11, 2001.
